Proper Window Maintenance
A Consumer Guide To Replacing Windows

Proper Window Maintenance – Help Them To Help You

When you first have your new replacement windows installed they will be looking at their best. To keep them both looking good and performing well over their lifetime, proper window maintenance is called for.

Not only do wood windows need proper and routine maintenance, but so do other forms. Though maintaining windows properly when they're vinyl and aluminum is very easy, they still need very low maintenance and can still benefit from annual lubrication to hardware.

A good clean once in a while won’t go amiss either. However, you need to be careful when cleaning vinyl and aluminum windows. Strong detergents contain solvents and abrasives can seriously damage the surface of the window frame.

Fetch Your Cloth

Though most dirt should be washed off by rain, some may require you to remove it. A soft brush or cloth will do to get rid of the grime with just warm water or a very mild cleaning solution. Special cleaners are available to purchase for maintaining vinyl and aluminum windows or cladding.

Low-maintenance window frame materials like vinyl and coated aluminum do not need maintenance like painting. If you do decide to paint them for a change of color, then you should take great care as this will probably cause damage as well as affect the manufacturer’s warranty terms.

For correct maintenance procedures, window frames constructed from any material should have their border caulking and weather stripping inspected regularly.

Wooden windows need varnishing or painting every 2-5 years. If you have sliding windows, then maintaining and cleaning the sash tracks and applying furniture wax can also keep things moving smoothly.
