A Step by Step Guide to Measuring for Replacement Windows
A window can brighten up any home. However, like most things in life, we cannot rely on a window for our entire lives. Windows need replacing. You don't need to call the nearest handy man to come and do the job for it. With this step by step guide to measuring for replacement windows, you can do it yourself fast and effectively.
So whether you are looking to redecorate your home, want to switch to a more energy efficient type of window or are in need of a replacement window due to a fly ball landing in the middle of your living room, you will have all the know-how you need to get the measuring job done right.
- First of all, when measuring for replacement windows, you should always take the measurements from the inside of your house. Measuring from the outside is an easy and frustrating mistake.
- You will need to find both the height and the width of the window. Vinyl window replacements only require height and width; steel and aluminum window replacements require height and width, plus level and square.
- To find the width, measure form the inside of the jamb on one side of the window to the inside of the jamb on the other side. It's always a good idea to take three measurements: at the bottom, at the top and in the middle of the window. You should use the smallest measurement as your width measurement to ensure the window actually will fit.
- When it comes to finding the height for replacement windows, you will measure from the top of the sill to the bottom of the window's head jamb. Take the three measurements like you did with the width measurement to ensure accuracy.
- Finally, keep in mind that when give your measurements to an estimator or manufacturer, you will need to write your measurements a certain way - width is written first, then height. If you mix this up, you will end up with an ill-fitted window and have to go through the measuring process again.
Taking your own measurements is simple and fast to do. The two-minute job could save a handyman a trip over and could keep a little extra pocket change in your wallet. Instead of paying someone to do the measurements you can spend it on something more worthwhile. New curtains for the windows perhaps…
