New Marvin SillGuard™ Protects Against Water Intrusion

New Marvin SillGuard™, an innovative, durable and easy-to-install sill pan system provides builders and installers with an effective and cost-efficient means of minimizing the potential for moisture penetration and subsequent wall damage.

Available starting in the first quarter of 2006, SillGuard is a rigid three-piece sill pan made from a resilient, tough polypropylene. This recycled, non-corrosive and thermally non-conductive material allows SillGuard to resist cracking or shattering, even in cold environments. The sill pan system sits under a window or door to direct moisture out of a rough opening and onto a weather barrier plane, such as building paper or house wrap. Its patent-pending design features sloping drainage channels and support ribs that drain moisture away from the interior wall before it makes contact with the window or door frame and the wall cavity.

“We considered various methods to help builders protect themselves from the costs and risks associated with water intrusion” said Dan Lang, product planner, Marvin Windows and Doors. “For builders who take pride in their work and want to reduce the risk of moisture damage in the homes they build, SillGuard is an effective solution.”

Based on a comparison of new-construction building techniques, Marvin found SillGuard to be superior to using flexible, self-adhesive tape alone. Unlike tape, SillGuard won’t blow in the wind, stick to itself or fail to adhere to a structure in cold, wet or dirty conditions.

The versatile three-piece design of SillGuard includes right and left corner pieces and a 48-inch center. The pieces can be easily trimmed to fit varying rough opening widths using a pair of common shears or lengthened with additional center pieces. SillGuard is available in two jamb depths, 4 9/16 inches and 6 9/16 inches, to work with common new construction practices, including additions, and can be installed within minutes using common hand tools and building materials.

Once installed, SillGuard is discreetly hidden under the wall’s siding materials. SillGuard is Marvin Windows and Doors preferred method of rough opening preparation for new construction.

SillGuard plays just one part in a structure’s overall water management system and is designed to be used in conjunction with a properly engineered and installed drainage plane. It is not recommended for use with bow or bay windows, wall depths of less than 4 ˝ inches, sills that are not horizontal, impact zone 4 hurricane products, doors on grade or recessed masonry openings.
