Rolling And Accordion Type Shutters - To Slide And Protect

Other types of exterior shutters exist too apart from the traditional hinged design of side hinged colonial shutters or top hinged Bahama awning shutters. These are rolling and accordion type shutters.

Both a rolling shutter and accordion shutter will keep your homes safer for storm protection or security purposes. But unlike a colonial or Bahama shutter these shutter designs are not so adaptable in their use.

These outer shutters are easy to use and extremely strong and secure, and can give good insulation and sound control as well. Unfortunately, the roll shutters are very expensive.

Up To Down, Or Side To Side

Installing the rolling type of external aluminum shutters is like having a garage door on the outside of the window in question. They just roll down to close on side tracks, and can be either manually powered or motor driven.

If electrically powered, they also have the tremendous advantage of a central control unit, so all the shutters can be closed from one place. Some of these roll shutters can also be used in conjunction with a wind sensor, which will close them up automatically when the wind reaches a given speed.

Accordion shutters fold up sideways and run on tracks above and beneath your windows to close over and secure them tight. They can lock on the other side or meet in the middle.

Accordion shutter have no central operation but can be operated from outside or inside, though only from inside where the windows slide or swing inwards. Accordion shutters also have the easy ability to protect curved parts of your home. These shutters can also be fitted with no limitation to width though height restrictions apply. The design problem for these shutters is the casing that is used to contain these shutters when they are in the stacked position. If too large, these can be unattractive, especially so with accordion style where the housings are at the sides. But newer styles do fold better so need less space to contain them.
