Shutter Terminology - A Quick Glossary

At first any new subject can be a bit confusing. There's always a new vocabulary of different terms to learn. So some help with shutter terminology may well be appreciated.

Installing external shutters can help us to get more from our windows and have a better looking home as well. Though this guide is not overly complicated and has some explanations along the way, it's still nice to be able to refer to a glossary.

Here now is a brief glance in one place at some of the terminology of shutters:

  • Accordion: Accordion shutters fold outwards from window sides on tracks above and below the window. They are very convenient and one of the strongest shutters around.
  • Bahama: Bahama shutters or awnings are hinged at the top of the window and hang out down over it on supporting arms at adjustable angles. They are slatted to allow light through.
  • Board And Batten: This is a type of colonial shutter. The shutters are made of vertically placed boards, with battens across at the top and bottom of each shutter. Joined Board And Batten means there is no space between the boards for air and light to pass through, whilst Spaced Board And Batten means there is.
  • Colonial: Colonial shutters are those most often encountered on houses. They are paired, hinged and both swing inwards from either side of the window.
  • Louvers: These are slats in colonial shutters or elsewhere in shutters or blinds (or closet doors). Louvers are either fixed or adjustable to allow for control over ventilation, shading and window privacy.
  • Raised Panel: Another of the options in a colonial shutter, these raised panels have shaped edges and completely enclose the window opening. There are different styles and some have cut-outs to allow for an amount of ventilation and light.
  • Roller: Roller shutters are very expensive but can be motorized and all operated via a central control unit.
