Self-Cleaning Glass - It's Science, Not Magic

Not many folks enjoy having to think about cleaning their windows. But now with the appearance of a self-cleaning glass it really need not be something to think much about.

A glass that cleans itself may sound like it comes from a fifties sci-fi movie about `the home of the future' with some kind of robot arm that sticks out, grabs a wet cloth and starts wiping away. But the reality is far different from that.

The inventor and manufacturer of this world first is international glass company Pilkington. And they use the technology of an active chemical coating on the outer surface of their self-cleaning glass product known as: Pilkington Activ.

Powered By The Sun And Rain

This coating gets dirt busting by absorbing UV energy in sunshine. It starts working about a week after installation (depending on the sun). The process of UV absorption causes a chemical reaction that breaks up any organic dirt present on the glass so that it cannot get a grip on your windows or skylights.

Then, next time it rains the weather will do your work for you. The rain will spread out and wash the loosened dirt away, and won't form droplets which can lead to streaks.

Once the coating has activated, it's no problem if the weather is often cloudy. The manufacturer says it will keep going 24/7. Yes, it'll even work at night from starlight and moonlight (moonlight is reflected sunlight remember).

The coating is designed to last at least as long as your window, and can only be damaged if the glass is scratched. If it doesn't rain for a while then a hosepipe is what's needed. A damp cloth may also be necessary for heavy stains that suddenly arrive - such as birds leaving behind calling cards whilst flying over for example.

So although sometimes needing a bit of assistance, most times Pilkington Activ glass cleans itself.
