Single Pane Window - Still A Choice For Some

While most existing older windows are a single pane window. This fact should not necessarily indicate that windows with just one pane of glass are history. It is true that in replacement window terms more replacements are double paned, there are still reasons to consider their more modest and affordable relatives.

And affordability is one reason for a start. Even though the price of insulated (multi paned) windows are dropping, they will still be generally more expensive than single pane windows.

As well as doing better in a cost comparison, a window with single glazing will also weigh less. And this may or may not be a concern to some homeowners. However repairs certainly can be, and don't forget that repairs to single paned units are a lot simpler and cheaper indeed.

For a start as most of these window types are divided up into different sections (or lights). So if one part gets broken then it's a relatively straightforward matter to just replace the broken pane without disturbing the whole window. Whereas double or triple paned windows usually now come as a whole and therefore need to be completely removed if the glass gets badly fractured.

A Matter Of Light And Heat

A single-glazed window with clear glass also allows more daylight to pass through it then any other type.

However the single windowpane design also have the least impressive ratings when it comes to the important consideration of the U-factor; so too much heat loss can be a problem. As can heat gain in hotter climates or more sunny locations.

So long term a single glazed window won't be best for your energy costs, though installing a quality storm window can help a lot with insulation.

Still available in a whole plethora of styles and sizes, replacement windows with single windowpane thickness are a long way from having their design itself completely replaced.
