Window Installation - I'll Fix That Window

The terms window installation and window insulation sound similar don't they? And funnily enough the two topics are directly related as well. Not installing windows properly will affect their performance no matter how expensive the windows are. And it may even end up making their purchase itself a waste of time and money.

This means that most homeowners will try to find a reliable window installation contractor. And you can find some valuable tips on how to do this in the "hiring a contractor" section.

But if you are going to have a go at installing the windows yourself here is some general advice:

Decide before you start off if the existing window frames themselves are in an excellent condition or not. If so then that will save a lot of time and effort as they can remain in place. The new sashes can simply fit into the old frames.

Newly installed windows must absolutely be both level and plumb, or they won't seal properly to prevent air and water leakage or operate properly. So check this with a carpenter's level before the finishing trim is hung, not after.

Build support to the bottom of the window: Spaced and doubled shims will be okay for aluminum, fiberglass and wood. But vinyl windows must be supported all the way across the sill with solid shims for wedges.

The replacement window should not be exactly the same size as the opening, but slightly smaller so pay heed to manufacturer recommended clearances. Understand also that vinyl window frames need more clearance than when installing windows of materials like wood, aluminum or fiberglass.

If you'll be using foam for installation make sure it's either minimally expanding or non-expanding.

It's a lot easier to have the likes of window fins and frames predrilled before installing.

If you're going to replace the siding as well, then install the new windows first. This way will mean both a better looking and more energy efficient finish can be achieved.
