September 25, 2005 By: Anthony Lee Tools To Install A Window - The Right Tool In Your HandHaving the proper tools to install a window to hand won't guarantee an absence of installation problems its true. But proper tools for the job will certainly remove a potential source of problems and concerns that can be encountered when installing new windows. Of course if you don't really want to do it yourself then not having the right tools to install windows properly is a convenient excuse. But it'll probably be a short-lived defense because not that many different tools and materials are actually needed. This is a general roll call of tools and materials for installing windows, because circumstances can differ. You'll need the likes of a handsaw or circular saw if the old existing installed frame has to be removed and a pry bar and possibly a chisel as well. Then after that, tools and materials related to the installation of the replacement windows may well include all of the following: A tape measure, hammer and nails, drill/driver, handheld screwdriver and screws, a carpenter's square, utility knife, self-adhering waterproof membrane or alternatively builder's felt; minimally expanding polyurethane foam, some tripolymer caulk and a caulking gun, and probably some shims as well. So what are you going to do with those new tools then? Well for a quick glance at the basics of installing a window: Make sure the rough opening is level, plumb (vertically true) and free of loose material. Avert water penetration by sealing the perimeter of the opening with waterproof membrane or builders felt. Put in the replacement design window and make sure the window is installed plumb, level and square. Once the window is hung, seal the outside boundary with more membrane and apply metal flashing and caulk. Now seal the gap between the frame and window on the interior and insulate with minimally expanding foam or layers of fiberglass and aluminum tape. Or if too narrow, then silicon caulk.
