A Consumer Guide To Replacing Windows |
Vinyl Replacement Windows - Often The Popular ChoiceWhen most people look to improve their home by buying replacement windows nowadays, then vinyl replacement windows are more often than not the frame choice they opt for. The vinyl replacement window was scoffed at when it first appeared on the market, because quality was often a problem. But now that is not the case and vinyl (known as PVCU or UPVC in many countries) is riding high in window frame construction. Vinyl windows are very durable indeed, which is one reason for their popularity. They don't require any maintenance like staining or painting for a start. And because the color goes right through the frame rather than being a surface coating any small scratches won't shine out like a beacon. But color choice can be limited. Make Sure The Frame Is Thick EnoughVinyl as a material for substitute windows is also a very good insulator as well, so a quality vinyl window is a very energy efficient window. Vinyl windows can be further insulated too, by having the hollow chambers within the frame filled with foam. This can help with a home's energy costs. And vinyl windows are very affordable too, with insulated vinyl a bit more costly. To increase the windows security against burglars for vinyl windows ensure that the beading (which holds the glass in place) is internal beading and not external. Also, for structural sturdiness, make sure that the frame is `fusion-welded' where the vinyl frame joints are bonded by either heat or a chemical process. This is better than having them screwed together. Vinyl is quite strong, though the amount of depth or thickness of the frame will be something you should check as well. Find out too whether the vinyl is reinforced with a metal like aluminum or steel. For a window frame made of vinyl can have a problem with losing its structural shape over time. This can either be due to extremes of temperature, persistent strong sunlight, or just the weight of the glass if the window is not properly installed and supported. Another thing you should look for is to make sure you have `virgin vinyl' in your windows and not what is known as `regrind.' This is recycled from other vinyl products and does not perform as well, though it is cheaper. Also see; types of replacement windows.Author Notes:
