Another important thing is not to get embarrassed by asking the same question again if you didn’t understand the answer. A Guide To The Way Ahead

So what you won’t find here is sales talk that will tell you exactly what window replacement you have to buy because the alternatives are no good. There are advantages and disadvantages to all the window options, and these matters can only become clear when what you need and want is understood.

We’ll help you to find out what it is that you want by having a look at what’s available in the market for window replacement, seeing how your choice can affect the situation. Because we’re fair, we won’t tell you what to do.

You may have already visited some showrooms or checked out some window company websites to see if you can find the windows that you would like to purchase. Remember; they’re trying to sell you something and we’re not.

Some examples of things to watch for:

  • If you’re considering installing aluminum windows then make sure the aluminum window frames have thermal breaks in them. Otherwise aluminum is a poor insulator.
  • If you are going to install new windows with vinyl frames, as many folks do. Check with the window companies you get estimates from that their windows are manufactured from virgin vinyl, and not recycled vinyl from other products, which is known as regrind vinyl. These will not have the same guarantee of color fastness as the virgin vinyl window. It may however, explain why their windows are cheaper than rival replacement window suppliers are.
  • Another must thing to look out for is an air space of between ½ and ¾ of an inch between the glass panels in a double or triple paned window. If the air space is more or less than this, the insulating and noise reduction benefits that these type of windows can bring will be lessened.
  • You may intend for the new windows which will replace your existing ones to contain tinted glass, which is designed to reduce glare from too bright sunshine. If so, ask if you can see a sample of the actual glass that will be put into your windows. This is because no industry standard color chart exists. It is therefore impossible to guarantee exactly the color ordered.

A Step by Step Guide to Measuring for Replacement Windows
October 01, 2009

A window can brighten up any home. However, like most things in life, we cannot rely on a window for our entire lives. Windows need replacing. You don't need to call the nearest handy man to come and do the job for it. With this step by step guide to measuring for replacement windows, you can do it yourself fast and effectively.

So whether you are looking to redecorate your home, want to switch to a more energy efficient type of window or are in need of a replacement window due to a fly ball landing in the middle of your living room, you will have all the know-how you need to get the measuring job done right.

  1. First of all, when measuring for replacement windows, you should always take the measurements from the inside of your house. Measuring from the outside is an easy and frustrating mistake.
  2. You will need to find both the height and the width of the window. Vinyl window replacements only require height and width; steel and aluminum window replacements require height and width, plus level and square.
  3. To find the width, measure form the inside of the jamb on one side of the window to the inside of the jamb on the other side. It's always a good idea to take three measurements: at the bottom, at the top and in the middle of the window. You should use the smallest measurement as your width measurement to ensure the window actually will fit.
  4. When it comes to finding the height for replacement windows, you will measure from the top of the sill to the bottom of the window's head jamb. Take the three measurements like you did with the width measurement to ensure accuracy.
  5. Finally, keep in mind that when give your measurements to an estimator or manufacturer, you will need to write your measurements a certain way - width is written first, then height. If you mix this up, you will end up with an ill-fitted window and have to go through the measuring process again.
